Quang Tri – Returning to the “source” of Gio An ancient well

If you have the opportunity to visit Quang Tri, do not miss the journey to explore the ancient well system in Con Tien commune (formerly Gio An) - a special cultural heritage, a vivid testament to the harmony between nature, people and history in the heroic land of fire.

Built by the Cham people about 1,800 years ago, this ancient well system is still preserved and used by the Vietnamese people to this day. Through the changes of time, the ancient wells still flow continuously, bringing cool water to nourish the entire countryside.

What fascinates visitors is the unique structure of the wells. Each well is made up of three overlapping stone circles, arranged in a yin-yang structure to naturally bring underground water to the surface. Most of the wells are located at the foot of red basalt hillsides, with crystal clear water that never runs dry all year round – an amazing masterpiece of ancient craftsmanship and engineering.

Not only a source of water, the ancient well is also the lifeblood of the community. Around the well area, people grow lettuce, a famous specialty vegetable, providing clean vegetables for the market in and outside the province. On summer days, the ancient well is also a place associated with the childhood memories of many generations - a place to cool off and play in the fresh nature.

In 2001, Gio An ancient well system was ranked as a national historical and cultural relic, affirming the great historical, cultural and ecological value that this place brings.

Nowadays, when coming to Quang Tri, tourists not only come to feel the heroic history, but also to find the "source" of life - where the ancient well still flows tirelessly, telling the story of more than a thousand years in the peaceful land of Gio An.
